How JuggerBot 3D’s Partnerships are Powering Regional Growth, National Impact

JuggerBot 3D has grown from a Youngstown startup to a nationally recognized developer of large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) systems for aerospace, defense, and industrial markets. Long-term collaboration with YBI, America Makes, and, most recently, the Youngstown Innovation Hub for Aerospace & Defense and Lake to River has helped to strengthen the company’s technical capabilities, boost market visibility, and expand its impact.

Turning Funding into Fuel for Innovation
A recent award from the Youngstown Innovation Hub will help JuggerBot 3D develop and scale a tamper-assisted additive manufacturing (AM) system. The tamper, or Z-leveler, improves print quality and mechanical performance by compressing layers after deposition, creating a smoother surface for subsequent layers. This funding supports new intellectual property and the commercialization of technologies for defense and aerospace.

For a small but growing manufacturing company, this type of support significantly accelerates development efforts.

“We have to claw, scratch, bite for every dollar we can. So being able to say we’ve found supplemental funding that doesn’t burden our customers is monumental,” explained Dan Fernback, JuggerBot’s co-founder.

In addition to easing financial constraints, the funding will enable JuggerBot to bridge the gap between innovation and real-world application by advancing lab-scale concepts into production-ready, reliable systems. This is essential for product performance and building customer trust in defense and aerospace, where reliability is critical.

Deepening Roots in National Advanced Manufacturing “Nodes”
Years of engagement have helped JuggerBot 3D build relationships with leading AM centers, including the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These partnerships and support from YBI and America Makes have placed JuggerBot 3D within the key “centers of expertise,” driving national progress in LFAM.

“We’ve been able to penetrate the major nodes in large format additive manufacturing — that’s been huge for our growth,” noted Fernback.

Access to these networks provides visibility, opportunities for collaboration, and early insights into trends, allowing JuggerBot to align its technology roadmap with industry direction.

JuggerBot 3D is also benefiting from Youngstown’s expanding innovation network, with relationships extending well beyond the region. One example began when a representative from a Hawaii-based firm stopped by Northeast Ohio to learn about the area’s advanced manufacturing capabilities. The recent visit was coordinated through America Makes’ Industrial Base Integration efforts, which focus on strengthening and connecting regional supply chains that are strategically important to national security, including manufacturing capabilities that support U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) activities in Hawaii.

During their visit, representatives toured YBI’s advanced manufacturing campus and were introduced to JuggerBot 3D. The meeting quickly revealed strong alignment between their technology roadmaps. What began as an introduction evolved into collaborative discussions, the potential for proposal development, and the unearthing of complementary technologies for next-generation marine and defense applications.

Fernback noted that, while the collaboration is still in its early stages, it demonstrates the power of Youngstown’s innovation ecosystem to create meaningful connections that help local companies grow and attract national partners. The relationship also highlights how the combined reach of America Makes and the Youngstown Innovation Hub can create opportunities that might not otherwise occur, reinforcing the region’s leadership in advanced manufacturing innovation.

“The incubator gave us space to react to real market needs and to grow in a way that makes sense for long-term success,” Fernback said.

While JuggerBot has expanded its footprint beyond the space at YBI, the team still relies on its guidance, advocacy, and connections. This ongoing partnership has created a ripple effect: JuggerBot’s success attracts innovative companies to the region, strengthens local collaboration, and enhances Youngstown’s reputation as a manufacturing and defense hub.

“The more exposure Youngstown gets, and the more the local ecosystem develops, the better off we’re all going to be,” stated Fernback.
